Online personal book catalogue: just what I’ve always wanted

I came across librarything.com today and signed up straight away. I have always loved books and was brought up to value them. I remember my father saying to me, “if you can read a book then you can accomplish anything”. As a result of this bookish upbringing, I can rarely walk past a bookshop, large or small, without wandering in, and I’ve been known to spend several hours just browsing or awkwardly dumping a pile of books on the counter as if I am checking books out of a library.

And now I can have a permanent record of my books, all neatly categorized and with a tag cloud to boot.

I’m afraid to say that I’m one of those people that judge people on whether they read many books and the type of books they read. I always make a detour for someone’s bookshelves the first time I’m in their home. I used to say, “know my books: know me” but this has been superceded by “know by bookmarks: know me”. I rarely read novels due to no longer commuting by train and spending too long on the interweb, but I do like a well written text book as they allow me to dip in and out frequently. When I do read novels, I find myself reading three or four simultaneously.
